Hemorrhoids Prevention Tips

Key to Preventing Hemorrhoids: Stop Straining

Establishing healthy bowel habits, may prevent future hemorrhoids from developing and should keep your existing hemorrhoids from getting worse. Hemorrhoids are often caused by constipation, which increases the likelihood of straining. In most cases, simlple lifestyle changes can reduce constipation. An increase in fluids and fiber are highly recommended.

Other factors that are not as simple to change include:

  • Pregnancy
  • Certain medical conditions
  • Certain medications
  • Immobility or reduced mobility
  • Lack of exercise

Aspirin and other nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs), such as ibuprofen, can cause hemorrhoids to bleed more. If you need to use a nonprescription pain reliever, choose one that is not an NSAID, such as acetaminophen (for example, Tylenol).
