Vaginitis

Vaginitis Overview:

Vaginitis is a very common disease that millions of American women contract each year.  Every woman throughout the course of her lifetime is likely to catch this disease.  Vaginitis is any inflammation or infection of the vaginal area.  There are many different types of vaginitis.  The three most common types are bacterial vaginosis (BV), trichomonas vaginitis (trich), and candida vaginitis (yeast infection).  Each type has specific causes and symptoms.  It is recommended that you see your health professional at first sign of irritation so the proper medicine can be prescribed to fend of permanent damage.

Vaginitis Causes:

Vaginitis has many causes as it encompasses so many different infections.  The main causes of infection are yeast, bacteria, fungus, viruses, creams, irritating clothes, bacteria shared between sexual partners, and sprays.  Bacterial vaginosis is caused when the healthy bacteria are replaced by harmful organisms.  This is the most common type of vaginitis.  Trichomonoas vaginitis is transmitted sexually and is the least common type of vaginitis.  This can also coexist with other sexually transmitted diseases.  Candida vaginitis (yeast infection) is caused by the fungus yeast growing excessively within the vagina.  This is the second most common type of vaginitis.

Vaginitis Symptoms:

Vaginitis has many symptoms and these differ depending on the type.  The most common symptoms include a burning and itching sensation either outside the vagina and vulva or inside.  Vaginitis can also cause a discharge that is different than normal or bleeding.  One often feels pain or discomfort while having sexual intercourse or urination.  Every four out of ten women will not present with these symptoms.  Many women are unaware that they have vaginitis until a routine gynecological exam is performed.  For these reasons, it is very important to schedule your gynecological exam at least every two years.
